Residential and commercial low-voltage work get quoted the same way on a lot of contractor websites: same list of services, same generic photos. In practice they’re different jobs with different failure points, and a business owner comparing quotes without knowing the difference is comparing the wrong things.
What changes at commercial scale
Code compliance isn’t optional. A residential install has some flexibility on cable routing and labeling. A commercial building doesn’t: plenum-rated cable is required above drop ceilings used for air return, fire-stopping at every wall penetration gets inspected, and TIA/EIA-568 labeling standards matter because someone other than the installer will troubleshoot this network in five years. A contractor quoting commercial work without mentioning any of this is quoting it like a house.
Downtime has a cost. A homeowner can live with a network closet being worked on for a day. A business with a point-of-sale system, VoIP phones, or a server room can’t lose connectivity during business hours without it showing up as lost revenue. Commercial jobs need to be scoped around after-hours or phased work, and that has to be priced in up front, not discovered mid-project.
Documentation isn’t optional either. A residential job might end with the homeowner knowing where the panel is. A commercial job needs as-built diagrams, labeled patch panels, and a cable management plan that the next contractor, or the next IT hire, can read without a walkthrough.
Scale changes the math on redundancy. One dropped run in a house is an inconvenience. One dropped run to a POS terminal or an access-control panel in a business is a support ticket, and possibly a security gap. Commercial scoping should account for redundant paths on anything mission-critical, not just get everything connected once.
What to ask a contractor before hiring
- Are they licensed and insured for commercial work specifically, not just residential?
- Will the install be plenum-rated where required, and do they know your building’s fire code without you having to explain it?
- What documentation do you get at project close: as-builts, labeling, a cable schedule?
- How do they handle work that has to happen without disrupting business hours?
A contractor who answers these without hesitation has done this before. One who needs to look it up hasn’t.
